MyGovID 2FA code isn't arriving
Official guidance uses different six-digit codes at different stages: email for confirming a basic-account address and SMS to a Department-verified phone for verified-account steps. Identify the stage before troubleshooting delivery.
Check 1 — The phone number on the account
If you changed your phone number and didn't update MyGovID, the code is being sent to a number you no longer use. You'll need to update the number through your MyGovID profile or via the MyGovID app's account-management section.
Check 2 — Signal and carrier delays
SMS delivery in rural Ireland or on certain carriers can be delayed by several minutes. MyID has not found a current official delivery time or rate-limit window. Avoid repeated requests and follow the on-screen instruction.
Check 3 — SMS spam filters and blockers
Some carrier and phone-level spam filters block automated SMS from short codes. Check:
- Your phone's "Filtered Messages" or "Junk" folder (iOS: Messages → Filters → Junk; Android: Messages → Spam protection).
- Whether your carrier's call-blocker service is blocking SMS from automated numbers.
- If your phone is set to "Do Not Disturb" mode that suppresses SMS notifications.
Check 4 — You're requesting too many codes
Several requests can create confusion about which message is current. Pause and use only the latest code accepted by the official screen.
None of the above — what next
If the destination is correct and the code still does not arrive, contact the official Help and Support and describe whether the missing message was email or SMS. MyID cannot diagnose the government system or reset the account.
I no longer have the phone
If the phone number registered to the account is no longer available, use official support for the current change or recovery process. Do not assume that creating another account or visiting a particular office is required unless the Department tells you. See forgot password for the related "lost-everything" scenario.
Keep account contact details current and follow the recovery options that the official profile actually displays.
